Cancer Testing Resources

Some types of cancer can be more easily treated and often cured if they are detected early and before they have had the opportunity to spread to other parts of the body. Examples include:

  1. Breast cancer: Breast cancer can often be treated successfully if it is detected early through self-examination, mammography (annual mammograms), or other diagnostic tests.
  2. Prostate cancer: Prostate cancer is often asymptomatic in its early stages, so regular screenings, such as an annual prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, are important for early detection.
  3. Cervical cancer: Cervical cancer can be detected early through regular Pap tests, which can detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix.
  4. Colorectal cancer: Colorectal cancer can be detected early through regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, which can detect precancerous polyps that can be removed before they become cancer.
  5. Lung cancer: Lung cancer can be more difficult to treat if it is not detected until it has advanced, so it is important to be aware of the risk factors and to undergo regular screenings if you are at high risk.
  6. Skin cancer: Melanoma and other skin cancers may first appear as discolored areas on your skin. Annual checks with a dermatologist are recommended for high-risk individuals and are not a bad idea for anyone with regular sun exposure.

Early detection doesn’t guarantee a cure, but it can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment. It is always a good idea to discuss your risks and the recommended screening tests with your doctor.
